Thousands of people passed into Europe here in summer 2015, before Hungary closed its borders. ; In September 2015, as thousands of refugees arrived in Europe in search of protection from violence, poverty and persecution, Hungary decided to close its borders and crossing points, and bring in heavily restrictive terms for refugees wishing to enter Hungarian territory. This unexpected decision, meant that refugees had until midnight refugees to enter the country via an official border crossing, where they would then be taken by bus and train to the Austrian border. Since then, the so-called “transit zone” at Röszke near the Serbian border has effectively become a detention centre for arrivals. UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi has called on Hungary to do away with it, saying it is blocking asylum-seekers from accessing asylum.[/caption]

Purple dye on the finger indicates successful vaccination. ; As an estimated 500,000 Rohingya sought safety in Bangladesh between late-August and October 2017, UNHCR began work on an extension site next to the long-established Kutupalong refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar. Whole families, young mothers and unaccompanied minors were among those fleeing for their lives since fighting reignited in Myanmar. They came by boat or walked barefoot for days, wading through vast rice fields. They left most of their possessions behind. Large groups crossed into south-eastern Bangladesh hungry, in poor physical condition and in need of life-saving support. By mid-September, the Bangladeshi Government allocated some 2,000 acres of land on which family tents and temporary communal shelters were erected to shelter new arrivals. UNHCR site planners estimate that these will be sufficient to house 150,000 people.[/caption]
